It is said that 90% of our behaviour is totally unconscious. This 90% includes all of those things you do well AND all those behaviours and habits of which you are not so proud. These behaviours run on automatic pilot and are referred to as Unconscious Processes.

Memories and events from our past are connected together and form an expectation of how we will behave (or feel) in a future situation. Mostly, this system works well and enables us to live our lives without having to be consciously aware of everything in our environment. However, there are times when, as children, we jump to a false conclusion purely because our cognitive functions (thinking abilities) are not fully formed until around the age of twelve.

Consider the following:-
A small child of 7 or 8 years old is called to the front of the class by their teacher who proceeds to cynically embarrass the child for the poor quality of their work. This child may well grow up to be fearful of standing in front of others and goes to possibly extreme measures (including panic attacks) to avoid any related experiences such as having to give a  presentation, standing on a stage, meeting groups of people etc.

These 'premature evaluations' colour and affect our whole experience of life even though, as adults, we may have no awareness what-so-ever of these initial ‘colouring’ events and they are the root cause of many presenting issues.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy aims to identify these unconscious processes and recode their meaning. In the example above, the adult would be guided to look back at the initial experience and realise that it was the teacher who was at fault not the child.

Reviewing past experiences with the knowledge and perspective of an adult not only recodes the initial memory - it also recodes all the other memories that are connected to the first. It's similar to using the 'Format' tool to reformat every page of a document instead of having to reformat every single page one at a time.

Unlike counselling, Cognitive Hypnotherapy is solution focused enabling a 'Brief' approach whereby the number of sessions is kept to a minimum.
