Human beings are born with only two hardwired or innate fears: fear of loud noises and a fear of falling. All other fears and phobias are learnt - many are even passed down from one generation to the other. A child very quickly learns behaviour from their mother and many generations ago their very survival might depend on learning what is to be avoided as quick as possible.

A fear of spiders, for example, might have originated when you were just four years old and your older sister thought it would be great fun to put a spider in your sandwich. You no longer have any conscious memory of that event BUT your unconscious mind remembers it and is still keeping you away from experiencing those feeling again even though the 'avoidance' behaviour leaves you feeling worse than the original event.

Left untreated, a phobia can begin to generalise. A fear of spiders can easily escalate to a fear of dark, dank places where spiders might be. And ... being fearful of places where spiders might be can lead to full blown agrophobia.

Anything that has been learned can be unlearned and Cognitive Hypnotherapy is one of the best tools for the job.
