On one level we all agree to a consensual reality; a group reality if you will. We all agree that this is a table, that is a chair.

But that is not the reality in which we live. Our group reality says this is a tree but my individual reality depends on the meaning I give to the tree. Does it provide fruit, shade and firewood or is a problem – something that’s in my way & has to be dug up.

Imagine you’ve won a free weekend to the National Line Dancing Championships being held at a Holiday Camp. How does that make you feel? For some that’s a dream come true because tickets are like gold dust. Others would rather stick pins in their eyes. So whose version of reality is right? (more…)

 An article in the Daily Telegraph newspaper on 3rd April 2009 reported the findings of  a study by the University of Melbourne that showed employees of a company who surf the internet for fun or personal reasons during working hours  are 9% more productive than others.

Why is it then that so many companies threaten to fire staff who are 9% more productive than their colleagues  ?

Anorexia nervosa is one of the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric condition in young women. It is estimated that 1%-2% of women suffer from anorexia, and between 5%-20% of those sufferers will die!  (more…)

For 99% of the time the human race has existed we lived in a Stone Age existence where ‘harm’ was obvious and physical. Over the last 15,000 years man has not elvolved but society has evolved out of all proportion.

Research in America has shown that whenever there is a high profile suicide reported in the media, the national suicide rate also goes up, reaches a peak after four days and takes ten days to return back in normal. When Marilyn Monroe died the suicide rate in America went up and amazing 12%.

This research also showed the number of car fatalities increased in a similar manner following a story of suicide.

Even more worrying was that when the media covered a story of a murder whereby the murderer then committed suicide, the number of car fatalities where the driver and passenger were killed went up. Worrying isn’t it?

Prior to the 17th Century, scientists were officially barred from dissecting bodies under threat of Blasphemy and more  – God fairing folk were entitled to a Christian burial and could not be used for medical research. Hence the rise in demand for the service of grave robbers and people such as the infamous partnership of Burke and Hare.  (more…)

Within hypnotherapy (and psychology in general) there are many different schools of thought and doctrines all purporting to be the ‘right’ way to approach therapy. Some of these approaches, such as in the direct or authoritarian approach of hypnotherapy, as practiced by Gil Boyne for example, place the emphasis on the power of the therapist whilst the client can almost be relegated to passive participation.  (more…)
